Craig is the Night Shelter Coordinator for Greater Together Manchester.
Changing Lives and Communities Together
Within a team of 3 colleagues, Greater Together Manchester work tackling poverty and transforming communities across Greater Manchester and Rossendale.
Craig’s main role is to run the rolling shelters through winter to provide meals, shelter, bed space and engage with people who would otherwise be rough sleeping in Manchester. Through a referral process, guests’ stay with the shelter can vary in length and with support of our partners that length of time is reducing.
“During the guests’ stay our focus is to ensure we provide some stability and support to, what can be, a chaotic search for employment and suitable accommodation.” Craig says. “The daily life of rough sleepers can be isolating, exhausting, dangerous, dehumanising, and hard work. Our goal is to do what we can, with a fantastic group of volunteers and venues, to give our guests safe rest, mental respite and a decent meal to continue their journey and the day ahead”. He continues.
Craig on networking …..
We often take for granted the foundations of a home and employment when seeking to move home or work. Rough sleepers and homeless who lack those foundations find barriers everywhere from not being able to shower and put on a suit for a job interview, to being unable to provide an address for correspondence. Many may have a mobile phone but access to free Wi-Fi and a place to charge a battery become daily challenges.
By working with networking groups, we can expand the reach to include more people who may be able to donate every day and formal clothing, blankets, food and things people need to move forward in life. Bowdon Business Club’s donations help us fill the gaps of bespoke needs our guests may have.
